Kerala which is often referred to as 'God's Own Country' has many Hindu temples. Many of the temples have unique traditions and most hold festivals on specific days of the year. Temple festivals usually continue for a number of days. A common characteristic of these festivals is the hoisting of a holy flag which is then brought down only on the final day of the festival.

Kerala's grandest and most well known temple festivals are its poorams, particularly the famous Thrissur Pooram.

Vela festivals are similar to pooram festivals in terms of scale. They occur at different times though, particularly after the harvest season in March and April.

Largest and most famous of all Poorams, the Thrissur Pooram is held at the Vadukkannathan Swamy temple of Thrissur, Kerala every year in April - May.

Thrissur Pooram has a history of almost two hundred years, going back to the reign of Raja Rama Varma aka Sakthan Thampuran. Raja Rama Varma started the celebration of Thrissur Pooram with the united agreement of ten temples located around the Vadakkunnathan temple that are ordained as two groups namely Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu, It is considered as the largest festival in Asia that is secular in nature.

The temple-festival falls in the month of Medam of the traditional Malayali calendar, on the day when the “Pooram” star witnesses the rising moon. Being observed according to the Malayalam calendar, the dates for the observance of the festival varies each year between April & May & in 2021 will be celebrated on 23rd April.

One of the main attractions of Thrissur Pooram is the “Kudamattom” event.
Elephants - lots of them, and highly adorned ones - mark the event of the Kudamattom ceremony, which is a central part of the week-long festivity. The term 'Kudamattom' comes from two root words, 'Kuda' meaning Umbrella and 'Mattom' meaning Change. Thus, the ceremony displays a competition of changing colourful canopied umbrellas from above the adorned elephants arrayed face to face between two teams, namely, Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu. This change of colorful umbrellas atop colorfully adorned caparisoned elephants is accompanied by Panchavadhyam melam percussionists who strike up a frenzied performance & the umbrellas are changed in tandem.

A humble tribute to my childhood memory of watching Thrissur Pooram live that is still so vivid & colorful.

Presenting “Pooram” a rainbow rhapsody of colorfully adorned umbrellas representing the “Kudamattom” ceremony. The umbrellas are intricately embroidered in VIBGYOR colors with gold canopy & detailing.
