This weekend our Sari-torial Safar takes us on on a journey that started in erstwhile undivided Bengal & slowly with time has been practiced in several states in India & Bangladesh. A matchless interweave of age-old tradition and constant revival, Jamdani – the flower vase – survives as a living relic of a glorious legacy. It is one of the most time intensive and advanced hand weaving techniques in the world, a technical marvel, a result of profound human skill. In 2013, the traditional art of weaving jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Our Guest Speaker today is one of India’s foremost designers Gaurang Shah known for his inventive interpretation in weaves, fabrics, texture, motifs and colour. Recipient of several awards over the years, the most recent feather in his cap is the prestigious Best Costume Design National award in 2019 for the multilingual movie "Mahanati".
Gaurang calls weaving Jamdani a form of meditation He defines it as the art of fine ‘Parsi Gara’ done directly on the loom wherein its motifs are inlaid into the Rohan Ranadiveabric by adding a denser thread to fine warp threads by hand.
