Tanchoi style of weaving travelled to India from China thanks to Parsi traders from Surat & their love for silks! Legend has it that in the mid 19th century a Parsi merchant Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy
commisioned 3 weavers from a Joshi family in Surat to travel to China to learn this particular technique of weaving this particular brocade silk. The 3 brothers upon return adopted the name of their Chinese teacher who taught them weaving “Chhoi” & “Tran” is Gujarati for 3 referring to the 3 brothers - thus was born Tanchoi a style of weaving brought to India by the 3 brothers in Surat from their teacher in China!
