Kani Kaanum neram...

“Kanikkonna” ( Botanical name:Cassia Fistula) like a golden shower is in full bloom during “Vishu” the harvest festival of Kerala. The cascading golden yellow bunch of flowers is a symbol of prosperity for the people of Kerala.

Konna Poovu ( Poovu - poo – meaning flower) is an indispensable component of Vishukkani – the auspicious first sight (the first thing to see) on the new year’s day break (Other components being gold, fresh vegetables, fruits, rice from the harvest and what ever you consider precious and essential). Vishu normally falls on 14th of April which coincides with this annual flower bloom.

There is an interesting legend behind the origin & importance of the Kanikonna. There are versions of this story we all heard growing up but this in essence is the gist. A little boy in a village in Kerala grew up enthralled with stories of Lord Krishna & worshipped him with a pure heart hoping to see him some day. And, lo & behold, Lord Krishna granted him an audience moved by his devotion. Krishna also untied his golden waist chain, “Aranjanam” and gifted it to the little boy. Next day, when the temple doors opened, the Lord’s “Aranjanam” was missing. The news about the theft spread everywhere. The boy’s mother was livid as she thought he had stolen it. She threw the “Aranjanam” which landed on top of a tree. The tree developed golden yellow flowers and the Kanikonna flower was born.

Let our “Kanikonna” be your first sighting this new year!

A perfect match for a Kasavu sari or mundum-neriyathum or just about any sari you choose to wear this Vishu.
