Mumbai is a city.
But, Bombay is an emotion.
Never a truer word said!
I grew up in Bombay & never got the ‘name change’ memo.
One of the most integral part of Bombay‘s landscape and cultural fabric is undeniably the Fiat or Premier Padmini taxi, or the ‘kaali peeli’ as we lovingly call it. The black & yellow beauty that dotted Bombay’s busy roads was so closely linked with Bombay that the film industry periodically paid tribute to it by using it in their films, and occasionally even the centre piece of the story – Dev Anand in and as Taxi Driver, Mehmood’s beloved Laila in Sadhu aur Shaitan, Amitabh’s favourite Basanti in Khud-daar, Gaman, Hanste Zakhm, Taxi Taxi, Taxi no. 9211 all have had cabbies as the protagonist.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end – the government mandated that taxis over 20 years old had to be de-registered and 2020 was ‘Meter Down’ for the last time for Mumbai’s Iconic Kaali Peeli Fiat Taxi. Now the Kaali Peeli Fiat Taxi will only live on in the hearts of Bombayites. So, we decided to recreate this Bombay’s Jaan the ‘Kaali Peeli’ on a Choli back for posterity as a collector’s item!

Presenting “Kaali Peeli“ a fully embroidered Kaali Peeli Fiat Taxi with BOMBAY emblazoned on its black body, a luggage carrier on its yellow top & the ubiquitous Indian evil eye “the nimbu-mirchi”. It may be meter down for the Kaali Peeli on the Bombay roads but never on Choli backs.

The choli can be made sleeveless or with sleeves.

Material: Pure Chanderi silk cotton with Shibori Tie & Dye.

Shibori Tie& dye is a Japanese art of dying fabric. It involves twisting, scrunching, folding and tying or binding the cloth, which is then dipped in dye. Where the cloth has been bound or tied, the dye resists the cloth, creating color and white patterns.

Colors:
The model here is wearing a Peach shade.
This Choli can be made in 4 amazing color options - Pink, Peach, Red & Orange.

Please note that colours and tones shown here are as close to the original as possible. Small variations may occur due to light, individual screen peculiarities or resolution.

Sizes: The choli comes in standard ready to wear sizes 34 to 48 with a 2 inch margin inside for alterations.

Delivery: This limited edition choli will be dispatched within 2-3 weeks of confirmed order with payment.
