Lakdi ki Kaathi ... Kaathi pe Ghodaa

घोड़ा अपना तगड़ा है
देखो कितनी चर्बी है

पर घोड़ा अपना अरबी है...

Ajrakh is said to signify the Universe. Because of the use of color palette. Color red for earth, black for darkness, white for clouds and blue for Universe itself.
Think moonless, think midnight, think darkness… the star spangled sky, against a stark blue-black background. This is what Ajrakh, meaning blue (azaraq)in Arabic, is likened to. The description couldn’t be more evocative than this for Ajrakh.

Ajrakh is a block-printed textile that is resist-dyed using natural dyes. including indigo and madder. Nature plays an important role in the making of Ajrakh. The craftsmen work in total harmony with their environment, where the sun, river, animals, trees and mud are all part of its making. It is the synergy between handloom textiles and vegetable dyes that creates magic.

Altogether, there are 13 stages in block printing. It takes nearly two months for a six-metre cloth to be printed. The first block is the background, then comes the outline, and then there are three to four inner fillings. Most importantly, the blocks need to be even, so that when you stamp it, you get an even colour. If it's not, then you get one spot which is darker than the rest. That also requires craftsmanship and the concentration of the craftsman; he has to be steady, he has to have peace of mind. So when he prints, you see the continuity in the block print.

Presenting “Lakdi ki Kaathi. Kaathi pe Ghodaa“ a result of a collaboration with the best there is on Ajrakhs; Sarfraz Khatri’s (Pracheen) with whom I had shot an episode on Ajrakh in अबnoरmal presents Touring Talkies.

The Horse block print is one of Pracheen’s most famous motifs on a madder red dyed Dupion silk. The horse is apparently an inspiration from a museum in Jordan & some 5 intricate blocks are needed to make each horse. A bright red shade with hand knotted bandhani on pure Handloom gajji silk for the blouse front & Ajrakh geometric patterns in black & madder to provide a color block to the amazing Madder Reds.

Material: Dupion silk, Gajji Silk & Raw Silk

Dupion is the recycled yarn of mulberry silk from Bangalore. Gajji Silk fabric is fine quality handwoven fabric made with mixed silk and cotton threads to create a textile that is simple cotton on one side and a rich appearance of glistering silk on the other.
