After the winter solstice, the sun begins its journey northwards (Uttarayan) for a period of six months & that auspicious date of transition; the date of Pongal in South India and Makar Sankranti in North and Central India is extremely auspicious as it marks the sun's entry into Makar Rashi or the Tropic of Capricorn from the Tropic of Cancer.

Pongal or Makar Sankranti the harvest festival of India brings a festive cheer all over the country. Kite flying is one of the biggest celebrations that marks the sun’s transition.

Uttarayan symbolises the awakening of the Gods from their deep slumber. It is believed that the idea of flying kites was brought to India by Muslims from Persia. The Kings and Nawabs of the time thought of it as an entertaining sport and used it to display their skills and prowess. Beginning as a sport for the Royalty, it soon trickled down to the masses
